Shalom uvruchim haba-im to the Ninth Learn Hebrew Pod Newsletter. Learn Hebrew Pod Lesson 40 is not an ordinary lesson. As we have just observed Holocaust Remembrance Day, shiur mispar arbaim is dedicated to the Holocaust – ha-Shoa. In our first two sessions, we will read together, in Hebrew and in English, from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, in which a teenage girl chronicled the story of her family’s life in hiding from the Nazis during the 1940s. The story of Anne Frank also leads to the third of our sessions, in which we will read--again in Hebrew and in English--one of the stories of the righteous non-Jews who risked their lives to rescue the innocent. We will also hear a little bit about the role of Yad Vashem--the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority--in paying tribute to these Righteous Among the Nations and in preserving the memories of the Holocaust’s victims. Your friends at Learn Hebrew Pod
As we look back at the history of the State of Israel, there is little question that the Holocaust--ha-Shoa--was one of the major factors that led to her founding. In the 1930s and 40s, as Nazism and fascism took hold in Europe and Hitler rose to power in Germany, Six million lost their lives simply because they were Jews. Millions of non-Jews were exterminated as well--ethnic Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, the disabled, homosexuals, and members of other social and ethnic groups. As members of future generations, it is our obligation and our honor to tell their stories. Through these stories, we are also able to understand the significance, the presence and the influence of the Holocaust in the lives of many Israelis. A Memorial and a Name - Yad VaShem Learn Hebrew Pod expresses its sincere appreciation to:
Mr. Eran Zmora and Zmora Bitan /Dvir Publishers for making possible our reading from their 2007 publication of Anne Frank's diary.
Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, for making possible our use of photos and stories from their website - www.yadvashem.org
